Medicare funding for Speech therapy
Medicare provides several funding options that may assist families in accessing Speech Pathology. These initiatives are designed to support children and young people with developmental needs, chronic conditions, and specific cultural support pathways.
M10 Expansion
Eligibility: Children and young people under 25 with specific conditions (e.g., severe speech/language disorders, stuttering, cleft lip/palate).
Coverage: Up to 8 assessment sessions and 20 treatment sessions (lifetime cap).
Rebate: Approximately $87.25 per session.
Referral: Requires a referral from a GP, consultant physician, or specialist.
GP Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan
The Chronic Disease Management Plan (also known as a CDM or EPC Plan) is available through your General Practitioner (GP) for individuals with a chronic or ongoing condition that is expected to last six months or longer.
Under this plan, families may access up to 5 Medicare-rebated allied health sessions per calendar year. Please note: Medicare rebates cover only part of the session fee. A gap payment will apply. Your GP must determine eligibility and create the referral before therapy sessions can be claimed.
Early Intervention Services for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)
Medicare provides specific support items for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). These are designed to support early intervention during critical developmental periods.
Eligible families may access: Up to 4 assessment sessions with allied health professionals (lifetime limit), and Uu to 20 early intervention therapy sessions (lifetime limit). These sessions must be referred by a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. These items provide a partial rebate; families are responsible for any gap payment.
Additional Medicare Assistance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
Medicare offers additional support programs for individuals of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. These programs help improve access to healthcare and therapy services.
These supports may include access to Medicare-rebated allied health sessions through specific referral pathways. Families are encouraged to speak directly with their GP to determine eligibility for these programs.
How Vox Speech Pathology Supports Medicare Claims
We provide invoices and receipts containing all required information for Medicare claiming. We do not bulk bill; however, families may claim eligible rebates directly through Medicare. Families using Medicare items must provide an appropriate referral from their GP, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist prior to claiming sessions.
